Thai traders are eyeing the country's growing market for cosmetics and jewelries; a trade official of Thailand said Friday, as the Southeast Asian nation is looking to further enlarge its export basket in Bangladesh.
The ASEAN nation, which has traditionally been a trading hub for gems and jewelry products, is looking to tap the country's booming market for beauty products through cheaper prices and wider range of offers, the officials said.
"Beauty products including cosmetics and jewelries can really be a big deal in the Bangladeshi market", said Moklachor Rahman, Senior Marketing Officer of Thai Trade Center in Dhaka.
His views came as a three-day Thai Trade Exhibition is currently being held in the city, where a large number of cosmetics and jewelry stalls are drawing large crowd of female customers.
"Thai beauty products and fashion accessories can potentially have even bigger demand in the Bangladeshi market, as the fair shows", Rahman said, "They are cheap but still exotic and suits the fashion needs of the local women", he added. The gems and jewelries have long been a major industry in Thailand with the global annual export value exceeding US$ 9.40 billion in 2009. Fashion and jewelry form the third largest export items for the ASEAN nation and comprises 6.82 per cent of the country's total export.
The country has long been recognised globally as one of the world's key gems and jewelry trading centres, aided by an age old local industry based around the capital city Bangkok while rough gemstones from all major gem-producing countries -- Madagascar, Tazmania, Nigeria, Kenya and Sri Lanka -- finds their ways into Thailand.
Apart from beauty products, there was also a notable presence of fashion accessories like garments, footwear, handbags as well as canned and dried food items at the fair.
The Trade Center official observed that the fair would create bigger opportunities for Thai cosmetics and jewelry exporters to enhance their market share in Bangladesh.
