Thanks giving motion on President's speech adopted

The Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Thursday adopted the thanks giving motion on President's speech after prolonged discussion for over 44.5 hours, when 237 lawmakers from both the treasury and the opposition benches took part in it, reports BSS as received from Sangsad Bhaban Thursday.
The motion was moved in the House by Chief Whip Vice- Principal Abdus Shaheed on January 11 for extending thanks to President Mohammad Zillur Rahman for his speech given at the maiden sitting of the fourth session of the 9th parliament. Whip ASM Firoj seconded the motion.
The general discussion on the motion began on the same day and continued for 28 working days of the JS.
A total of 204 members from the treasury bench including Prime Minister and Leader of the House took part in it and placed their submissions for a period of 37 hours and two minutes.
On the other hand, 33 opposition members including former speaker of the JS Barrister Zamir Uddin Sircar took part in the discussion taking a time period of seven hours and three minutes.
Five opposition members gave amendment proposals on the President's speech under article 34/3 of the Rules of Procedures. But all the proposals were rejected by voice votes.
Later, the treasury bench members, an overwhelming majority in the House, passed the motion by thumping on benches when Speaker Abdul Hamid Advocate placed it in the House for vote.
The JS also adopted a resolution to send a copy of the thanks giving motion to the President.
Besides Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, those who took part in today's discussion were Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Suranjit Sengupta, Begum Motia Chowdhury, Advocate Shahara Khatoon, Dr Dipu Moni, Vice-Principal Abdus Shaheed of the treasury bench and former speaker Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar and chief whip of the opposition Joynal Abdin Farrouque from the opposition.
