The ambitious project may lead to corruption again

THE ambitious project, the government launched to improve the city's traffic system initially made many happy. At the moment, no other project is as pressing as the need to improve the city's irritating traffic. The jams take a heavy toll on time of the city dwellers. Adoption of the 20-year Strategic Transport Plan, shows the government's concern about the problem. Can the city expect a solution to this jam nowbrFor the success of the 5.2 billion US dollar project, many factors should be taken into consideration. The capital city now needs underground railway, mono rail and flyovers to meet the multidimensional demands of increased city population. But some could say that the absence of these facilities was not contributing to the prevailing traffic congestion. The contention that years of mismanagement and underfunding in the transport sector created Dhaka's traffic problems, is partially wrong. brOf course, there was mismanagement in the traffic system but there was no underfunding for the city's transport system. It was planned with quite big funding. But the project money went to the pockets of the people involved in its implementation. So, there is apprehension about the success of the new project, to be implemented in phases in 20 years. To improve the city traffic system, it is necessary to train the road users including the drivers, the pedestrians and as well as the private car owners so that they all follow the traffic rules and discipline. Besides, the real estate sector needs to be aware of how not to create traffic problems.brMaksudur RahmanbrMotijheelbrDhakabr
