The Chinese psyche

Special Correspondent | Saturday, 11 February 2017

William, Steven and Caroline, three students from TianYi High School in WuXi, JiangSu, China visited Dhaka recently and were saddened to see the poverty-ridden life of the slum-dwellers. They came to Bangladesh during the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday from January 27 till February 2. They witnessed the life-struggle of slum people and helped some children living in the slums of the mega city.
"During the past two days in Bangladesh we saw so many things which are different from China, so many rickshaws, very lovely and kind volunteers in the slum schools and open parks. We spent our own money that we collected from our music play in Wuxi in the holidays and the pocket money to buy chocolates, food, some stationery items and flutes for these poor and homeless children," William, one of the Chinese students, said.
The chock-a-block Dhaka streets also impressed the Chinese students. He said the three Chinese students played flutes in front of the slum children and taught them how to play the instrument.
"We found these children really need help. We are here to experience the life that the people are undergoing here, to observe the social problems here, and to discuss what we can do".
"We should let people in China know about the distressed humanity of slum-dwellers of Dhaka and offering supports for them to improve their life standard," another Chinese student commented.
He vowed that after returning to China, the team would arrange charity bazaar in their Chinese city and raise money in their school to support Dhaka's slum dwellers.
"And the money we raised will be used to buy commodity for the children to help them live a better life. And we wish more and more people as well as Bangladesh government will take care of these homeless children."
"We wish these children will be well-educated like us, so that they can help the needy and also contribute to help Bangladesh economy in future."
