The Gaza conflict by numbers: Day 27

Sunday, 3 August 2014

The current round of fighting between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza began on July 8 and expanded with an Israeli ground assault on July 17. Here is a summary of the main numbers on day 27 of the operation: In Gaza, 1,766 Palestinians have been killed and another 9,320 wounded since the start of the Israeli offensive, emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said in an update at 1220 GMT. Figures released by the UN humanitarian agency OCHA, which were correct as at 1200 GMT on August 2 gave a total of 1,525 dead. Of the 1,196 killed whose identities could be verified, 1,033 were civilians, nearly 84 percent, OCHA said. The number includes 329 children and 187 women. Of the Palestinians killed, 191 were members of armed groups. On the other side, 66 Israelis have been killed, including 64 soldiers, all of whom have died since the ground offensive began. Most have died in fighting in southern Gaza but others were killed by militants who managed to infiltrate southern Israel. Among them is a soldier who was believed captured during an ambush in southern Gaza but who was declared dead by the army on August 2. Another 1,520 soldiers have been admitted to hospitals since the conflict began. Two Israeli civilians have been killed by cross-border rocket fire, which also claimed the life of a Thai agricultural worker, according to AFP.
