The hell on highways
Thursday, 24 July 2014
It is indeed pitiable to see the sufferings of the commuters who travel out of Dhaka to celebrate Eid every year. I do not understand why the authorities can not repair the roads much ahead of a major festival like Eid. Why do they wait for the last moments causing untold sufferings to the travelling people? We see in newspapers and on TV channels the very poor condition of many highways which create gridlock increasing the sufferings of the common people. Does the government not understand that this contributes to driving down the popularity of the ruling party? The communications ministry must change its work plan; we cannot accept excuses every year. Due to poor road condition, many accidents take place and many lives are lost. Who are responsible for the death and destruction which could have been avoided? I hope the commuters will be able to go home safely and comfortably during the next time-Eid-ul Azha-and I hope we will not hear the same excuse and see the roads have not been repaired half-heartedly. It is irritating. For this Eid commuters have no choice but to endure it.
