A rapidly increasing population creates mass unemployment and under-employment. In a country with little resources like ours it is not possible to diversify the job sector as fast as the population increases. So, everyone should take initiatives to remove unemployment and in that case education with emphasis on physical labour is a must; vocational and technical education will help people create their own jobs.
The government has recently made an attempt to introduce a new education policy. The new education policy will have an impact when the curriculum and other changes based on it are done properly. The people should be well informed about the education policy and the curriculum. The government should provide short training courses to teachers about teaching-learning process and evaluation system. These are called the curriculum dissemination process.
Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary defines education as a process of training and instruction which is designed to give knowledge and develop skills. According to our Five Year Plan (1997-2002), education is the basic need for the socio-economic transformation and advancement of a country's resource development. Education is also defined as a harmonious development of body, mind and soul by various education scientists. Education is a process by which people learn to think, learn to expand their creativity, learn punctuality, learn to do physical labour, learn to be patriot and learn to get financial benefits. Education also trains a citizen to adapt with the changes of society and also involve them to develop the country.
We need such an education policy that will encourage us to remove unemployment through vocational and technical education. And the introduction of an evaluation system is a crying need. Most of the parents of our society want their children to become a doctor or engineer; they never think of economists, entrepreneurs, astronomers, scientists, players, teachers etc. We also neglect vocational and technical education. Parents only send their children to vocational and technical education who are considered less meritorious. And all these create a psychological pressure on children to get a position beyond their capacity and quality. These all are the results of our traditional education policies. So, the government and the specialists are responsible to take an effective attempt to create awareness among the parents. For successfully doing this the education policy should have relevance to the economic conditions, culture, political situation, environment and all other native social aspects.
