The run for humanity
Tuesday, 23 December 2014
BRAC Bank and its employees are gearing up again for their annual run to raise funds for the needy and underprivileged of the society.
This is one of the most unique corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in Bangladesh. In its fifth year this year, the annual event, called DAUR, has been aptly subtitled Mini Marathon for Humanity, said a statement.
"What is different about this exceptional campaign this year is that instead of keeping the event limited to only BRAC Bank employees, the bank has invited members from different echelons of society - such as guests from embassies, other banks, multinational companies and international development organisations to participate in the mini marathon," the statement said.
The flagship CSR project of the year adds this new dimension in an effort to engage further and in a more profound manner the important people of society, those in a position to making changes, and to illustrate through this run the importance of empathy and caring for humanity.
Every year BRAC Bank organizes the marathon to raise fund for humanitarian cause. All employees donate fund to help the less advantaged people of the society and the bank matches the amount mobilised by the staff. The fund goes to a charity organization and also for distribution of warm clothes to the poor people in different parts of the country. This is the first such marathon initiative by a bank in the country and unique in serving the humanity.
Previously the beneficiary charity were -- Bangladesh Protibondhi Foundation, working for the Welfare of disadvantaged children, Back Up Tide, running schools for intellectually and physically challenged children, Bangladesh Association for the Aged and Institute of Geriatric Medicine (BAAIGM), running a hospital, old home and institute for old aged people, and Diganta Memorial Cancer Foundation that provides free of cost treatment of cancer patients.
The marathon is set to start at 6:00 am in the morning of January 2 with a total number of 2,000 BRAC Bank employees and invited guests participating. The run starts at Hatirjheel near the Police Plaza and ends at the same point after a complete circuit which covers 5.6 km.
