The temptation to weaken the ACC
Wednesday, 3 June 2009
ACCORDING to media reports, the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) is about to be made toothless. Dose it mean that the ACC would loss its independence as well? Why the ACC did not sue anybody from the civil service, even during the two-year draconian emergency caretaker rule is a question with no answers. And what about the uniformed personnel?
Under a party government, it would continue to suffer the lack of efficacy it suffered under the caretakers.
The new government must realise the importance of an unbiased drive against corruption. No doubt the ACC committed excesses and its erstwhile functionaries would find it difficult to answer for their acts of omission and commission. Much of what they in the ACC, under the caretakers, did, would shock any civilised democratic society. But the cure must not be sought by castrating the commission to turn it into an impotent body. One does not cut his head off for the cure of his headache.
The new government must not weaken the ACC. It would only create a negative image for it.
