CHITTAGONG, Oct 28: Theft of railway sleepers, E-clip, diesel and other costly equipment from the rail tract of different areas of Chittagong has become rampant and as a result train movement on different routes including Dhaka-Chittagong has become very risky, concerned sources said.
Due to this pilferage valuable equipment, a train accident occurred recently at Baratakia area under Mirersarai Upazila in the district in which 5 persons were killed on the spot and hundreds seriously injured.
The costly equipments which are being stolen regularly includes metallic pedal clip, bearing plate, dog spike, hook bold, nuts, screws and diesel which are very essential for smooth running of trains as well as regular maintenance work of the rail tracts.
Sources informed that some influential persons in collaboration with some corrupt rail workers and officials remove the equipments and parts and later sell these to different scrap shops and re-rolling mills. Sometimes, drug addicts steal these machinery equipments for meeting their daily needs.
Moreover, incidents of diesel theft particularly from the goods trains at different places are also taking place regularly. As such, if the authorities concerned fail to resist this criminality, dreadful accidents are likely to occur in future, sources apprehend.
