THM revolutionises tourism with ‘Greenaugurate’

A leap into sustainable hospitality

In an event that promises to reshape the landscape of sustainable tourism, the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management (THM), Dhaka University unveiled its visionary concept, "Greenaugurate." With the support of Community Bank and co-sponsorship from esteemed partners such as NRBC Bank, SBAC Bank, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), and HB Aviation Training Center, THM's Greenaugurate has embarked on a journey that is set to transform the tourism and hospitality industry. Luminaries from various sectors were present at the event on the Faculty of Business Studies premises of the University of Dhaka recently.
Santus Kumar Dev, professor and chairman of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, presided over the event. Vice Chancellor of University of Dhaka, Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, and the MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism (MoCAT), RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury were present at the event.
This year's theme centred around sustainable tourism and envisioned unparalleled success for the industry. Guests of the event included Sayeda Rubina Akter, MP and member of the Standing Committee on Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism (MoCAT); Md Mokammel Hossain, secretary, MoCAT; Professor Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, treasurer, University of Dhaka; Professor Muhammad Abdul Moyeen, dean, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka; Professor Dr Md Badruzzaman Bhuiyan, treasurer, University of Barishal; Masihul Huq Chowdhury, managing director, Community Bank Bangladesh Limited; Golam Awlia, managing director, NRB Commercial Bank Limited; Tushar Abdullah, editorial head, Ekhon TV; and the Additional Inspector General of Bangladesh Police and Chief of Tourist Police, Habibur Rahman.
Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, vice chancellor of the University of Dhaka, emphasised the green investment aspect of tourism, stating, "Tourism is a green investment. Assimilating renewable resources into the solar system can provide more efficiency towards the tourism industry." Sayeda Rubina Akter, MP, member of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Civil Aviation, highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change. She stated, "The cataclysmic attitude towards nature can bring vandalism in the tourism industry. By 2040, we are paving the way to intensify employment rates in this industry through the master plan of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina."
The event, adorned with exquisite decor, offered a range of activities including case competitions, gaming, and a sensational experience in the "360 Degree Photo Booth." These activities were not only entertaining but also promoted eco-friendly initiatives, aligning with the core theme of sustainability. Participants in the competitions and gaming activities won exciting prizes from the event's partners.
"Greenaugurate" stands as a testament to THM's commitment to pioneering sustainable tourism practices. The event marked a significant leap towards a greener, more responsible future for the tourism and hospitality industry, echoing the global call for sustainable practices in every sector.
