Thousands lose jobs as bird-flu panic hits Brahmanbaria

BRAHMANBARIA, Mar 17: Avian influenza, widely known as bird-flu, has left at least 8000 people unemployed in the district, sources said.
The poultry farmers in the district are counting huge losses every day as the sales of the poultry birds have come down drastically due to bird flu panic.
According to the District livestock office, over 10,000 poultry chickens, 40 local chickens, 31 ducks, four pigeons and 4500 eggs were culled as the avian influenza was detected at Ashuganj Poultry Farm, Pappu Poultry Farm, Rifat Poultry Farm and Manir Poultry Farm in Khariala village under Ashuganj upazila. The culled poultry birds were buried under soil.
Besides, some dead crows were also found lying on the roadsides of the district town.
Brahmanbaria municipality officials continued spraying disinfectants on the poultry shops in the town kitchen markets to check the spread of bird-flu. The District Livestock Department (DLD) is also spraying VIRKONS, TIMSON liquid, germ destroying chemicals on the vehicles and chickens and eggs being brought from Akhaura land customs station and Bangladesh-India border areas.
