Three by-election aspirants appeal for review of their candidature

Sunday, 15 March 2009

Three independent aspirants of the April 2 parliamentary by-poll in Rangpur-6, whose candidatures were turned down during scrutiny, Saturday appealed to the Election Commission (EC) to reconsider the returning officers' decision, reports UNB.

They are Motaharul Huq Bablu, Noor-e-Alam Jadu and Advocate Haider Ali.

On March 11, the candidatures of 19 aspirants were declared valid after scrutiny for the by-elections in seven vacated seats while that of 10 were cancelled.

Of the seven seats, Sheikh Hasina's cousin Sheikh Helal Uddin is almost certain to become MP from Bagerhat-1 as there was no contestant against him.

By-elections in Borga-6 and 7, Rangpur-3 and 6, Kurigram-2, Bagerhat-1 and Kishoreganj-6 constituencies would be held as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, JP Chairman HM Ershad and President Zillur Rahman vacated the seats.
