Three more spot LNG cargoes to arrive in August

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 15 July 2026

The government will buy three more liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes from the spot market by mid-August as most of the long-term suppliers skip supplying LNG due to the Middle East crisis and disruptions to the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
State-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL) has floated one re-tender and two fresh tenders to purchase the three cargoes for delivery over the August 1-2, August 5-6, and August 11-12 windows to meet the growing domestic demand.
The volume of the cargoes is approximately 3.36 million British thermal unit (MMBtu) each, according to a senior RPGCL official.
The cargoes on offer are to be delivered to the Moheshkhali Island, with an option to discharge to either of the country's two floating storage re-gasification units (FSRUs) located there.
RPGCL retendered for the August 1-2 delivery window as it got a higher price quote than its expectation in the original tender floated a couple of weeks ago, says the RPGCL official without elaboration.
RPGCL is a part of state-owned Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation, also known as Petrobangla, and is responsible for LNG trade in Bangladesh.
If the tenders become successful, the South Asian country's total LNG spot cargo buy so far this year will reach 38, with 36 of them bought after the commencement of the Middle East war, the
official says.
Bangladesh's total spot LNG cargo purchase will be three in August amid the Middle East crisis and Strait of Hormuz disruptions with these tender successes,
he says.
The country previously bought the highest eight spot LNG cargoes in a month in July and seven each in June, May, and April to avoid any crisis in the domestic demand, he adds.
Bangladesh has been buying more spot LNG cargoes since the start of the Middle East war as most of its long-term LNG suppliers from Qatar and Oman have stopped cargo deliveries by announcing force majeure, he says.
Bangladesh imported a total of 49 LNG cargoes from the spot market in 2025, he also says.
Bangladesh awarded the last four spot LNG cargoes for delivery over the July 14-15, July 20-21, July 23-24, and July 26-27 windows to Aramco Trading Pte Singapore Ltd, Gunvor Singapore Pte Ltd, BP Singapore Pte, and TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd at $16.20 per MMBTu, $15.885 per MMBtu, $16.98 per MMBtu, and $16.97 per MMBtu, respectively.
Since Bangladesh's LNG imports began in 2018, the country imported approximately 37.636 million metric tonnes of LNG through 607 cargoes as of May 2026, according to RPGCL data.
The country's overall natural gas supplies were around 2.67 billion cubic feet per day, including 1.01 billion cubic feet per day of re-gasified LNG, according to Petrobangla data as of July 13.
