Three Tahrir men nabbed

Sunday, 18 July 2010

The police arrested three men who they claimed were members of the banned Islamist outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir after the party took out a procession in an area adjoining the National Press Club protesting the arrests of its leaders and demanding their release Saturday, reports bdnews24.com.
A clash erupted between the police and members of the group when they tried to stop the procession.
Two police officials sustained injuries in the clash.
The three arrested are Fazle Hadi (28) Ripon Mia (22) and Ahsan (30).
However, two of them said had no links with Hizb ut-Tahrir. Hadi said he was a shop worker while Ripon held that he was a student of textile engineering. They both said they were only innocent passers-by who were caught in the fray.
A number of Tahrir leaders and activists including its chief coordinator Mohiuddin Ahmed, Bangladesh operations coordinator Syed Golam Maula, and second-in-command Kazi Morshedul Haque have been arrested at different times following the organisation's ban on October 22 last year.
Witnesses said that the procession, consisting of around 50 Hizb ut-Tahrir activists, started off from a Segunbagicha lane towards the press club at around 12:30pm.
However, the police blocked the procession at the roundabout in front of the High Court.
A police constable and a havildar sustained injuries in the fracas that followed.
Later, police charged the procession with batons and dispersed it.
Shahbagh police Chief Rezaul Karim said, "Despite having no knowledge that there was to be a procession the police managed to stop it. However, two policemen were injured in the process."
