Three to die for killing O-level student

A Dhaka tribunal convicted on Tuesday three persons, including two siblings, of killing O-level student Md Ammar Shamsi in the city's Lalbagh area in 2000 and sentenced them to death, reports UNB.
The convicts are Alamgir, son of Md Idris from Shahidnagar, Md Ziaur Rahman, son of Firoj Uddin of the same area, and his brother Salahuddin of Angur Lane in Lalbagh.
According to the prosecution, Md Ammar Shamsi, an O-level student of Dhanmondi Memorial Ideal School and son of Towfiq Shamsi, was kidnapped on October 16, 2000 while he was going to the birthday party of one of his friends, Mostafa Aslam Bappi.
The following day, the kidnappers demanded Tk 1.0 million to victim's brother Zafar over the phone, threatening to kill him if their demand is not met.
On October 19, Towfiq Shamsi lodged a complaint with Lalbagh thana in this connection.
On October 25, Detective Branch of police arrested Salahuddin from the New Market area when he came to collect the ransom money from the victim's father.
According to information from Salahuddin, the law enforcers arrested Alamgir and Ziaur Rahman from the area.
Later, the arrestees disclosed that they took Ammar to Gazipur National Park and strangulated him to death on October 16.
Later, police recovered the body from the park. A case was filed against four people in this connection.
DB Inspector Sadequl Islam submitted the charge sheet against four people on July 31, 2001. The court framed charges against them on May 28, 2002.
Following an appeal filed by the accused against the charge-framing, the High Court on April 13, 2004 stayed the case proceedings. The Supreme Court on January 20 this year vacated the stay order, paving the way for trial.
After examining the records and witnesses, judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka Abdur Rahman Sardar handed down the verdict after 15 years of the murder.
