Three transfer stations remain incomplete in Sylhet city

SYLHET, Jan 21: Waste disposal is being greatly hampered at the different wards of Sylhet city as the work on the three waste transfer stations couldn't be completed even after the end of its targeted schedule.
The Tk 24 million schemes were earlier extended till June, 2016, informed the acting chief engineer of the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Nur Azizur Rahman. Again it is extended till June, 2017 for the second time, he added.
Besides, the authority concerned failed to start another station in the South Surma area.
However, the SCC officials assured that the work is going on in full swing and would be completed in a month.
"We hope the scheme would be completed in a month", Mr Rahman added.
Asked about the fourth waste transfer station's fate, the acting chief engineer said the site is selected and it is expected to be started within months at a cost of Tk 8.0 million, the official added.  
On completion the secondary waste transfer stations would ensure safe dumping of household wastes, collected from the different residential areas of the city's 27 wards, he added. "Then we would go for waste management project with recycling facilities", he further said.
With a view to ensuring better waste management system, the city corporation will establish a sanitary landfill in the city's suburban Lalmatia area on the Sylhet-Fenchuganj road. The Tk 300 million project would be financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), official sources informed.
The Urban Public and Environmental Health Sector Development Project of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is implementing these development work.
A team of senior officials of the project had visited the site months ago while visiting the ongoing construction works on the secondary waste transfer stations, being constructed in Tilagar, Kazitola and Rikabibazar areas of the divisional town for collecting household wastes from the concerned areas.
