Three-wheelers allowed two hrs on highways for refueling

The three-wheelers, from now on, will be allowed on highways only for two hours in the morning for refueling compressed natural gas (CNG), the Ministry for Road Transport and Bridges said Thursday.
Citing a statement of Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, it said the auto-rickshaws, which are banned from the highways, will be allowed to run from 6:00am to 8:00am for taking the fuel from highway-based CNG refueling stations.
The minister made the disclosure on the day while responding to reporters in Comilla where he had gone to oversee the construction works on upgradation of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway to four lanes.
It said the three-wheelers cannot carry passengers while moving towards the CNG refueling stations on the highways.
The special move came at a time when owners, drivers and workers of such vehicles are protesting the highway embargo that came into effect from August 01, 2015 across Bangladesh.
The country has also been witnessing protest rallies, road blockades and clashes between the law enforcers and the protestors from various locations of major highways against the highway ban.
The protestors demanded immediate lifting of the restriction, saying that short-distance passengers through the highways are their main source of income and they need to go on the national highways where most CNG refueling stations are located.
