CHITTAGONG, May 16: Following unabated dropping of harmful chemical wastes from different industrial units located by the side of the river Karnaphuli the water of the river is being polluted gradually.
With the use of the polluted water thousands of people living on the river bank and its adjoining areas remain under constant health risk, doctors and environmentalists said.
Karnaphuli Paper Mill was established on the bank of the Karnaphuli in 1953 and as a good number of industrial factories and one thermal power plant are based on the banks of this river, polluted chemical wastes emitting from those industrial units are not only polluting the water of the river, it is also reducing the navigability, and thus become a threat to human habitation.
Due to pollution of water of the Karnaphuli, normal breeding of fishes as well as treasury of the fisheries resources are on a decline.
Environmentalists said, natural procedure of breeding of shrimps once used to prevail in the tributaries of the Karnaphuli, has already ceased to exist and consequently, thousands of fishermen families and those involved in breeding process, have been thrown out of employment.
With a view to protecting the river from the disaster, the environmentalists and experts stressed the conciousness of people besides the initiatives of the government.
Describing the throwing of wastes and garbages into the river as an uncivilised practice, they called for refraining from such a harmful trend and devise a healthy technique for their disposal.
