Thrust on bilateral cooperation to grow businesses

Malaysia is all set to develop the untapped Bangladeshi Halal market after the Malaysian Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development (MeCD) announced the participation of at least 30 Malaysian Halal manufacturers in the upcoming four-day long Halal Malaysia Week (HMW) 2008 - Dhaka beginning tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Dhaka Sheraton Hotel.

Speaking at a press briefing in the city Monday, Madam Hazizah Awang, President of Epic Tips, the Malaysian company told newsmen that while Malaysia is serious in developing the global Halal market, it is also committed to push for more local players overseas, and at the same time, is sincere in developing the regional Halal markets where it trades in.

Salahuddin Kasem Khan, president of Malaysia-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry said Bangladesh is failing to reap optimum benefit in bolstering export of halal consumer products in global market despite a Muslim country as there remains no body for certification.

"We will urge the government to set up a body under the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) to certify all consumer products as halal after proper inspection," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Malaysian High Commissioner in Dhaka Abdul Malek bin Abdul Aziz said: "We are ready to extend cooperation to Bangladesh to further develop its own local Halal market."

Bangladesh and Malaysia can work together in this new arena of businesses, he said.

Regarding the exhibition, Malaysian ambassador said: "Our purpose is to help establishing a linkage between the Bangladeshi and the Malaysian business community."

Madam Hazizah said the main objective of Halal Malaysia Week is to become the undisputed platform for the business communities of Bangladesh and Malaysia to foster and spur bigger business linkages and collaborations.

"It will act as a catalyst, as Bangladeshi entrepreneurs can also create healthy networking with their Malaysian counterparts to further develop their own local Halal market," she added.

She said Malaysia is well aware of the global Halal market potential and Bangladesh's highly untapped market where a big majority of consumers are Muslims. "With HMW 2008 Dhaka, we are definitely taking proactive steps in seizing this opportunity to introduce Malaysian Halal products globally, beginning in Bangladesh," she added.

According joint event organisers Epic Tips Sdn Bhd, having a sizeable Muslim population with similar tastes for food and are increasingly tolerant of each culture and norms, quality and export-ready Malaysian Halal products could easily find acceptance in Bangladesh.
