Education Adviser Ayub Quadri Monday stressed the need for concerted efforts of all stakeholders to ensure quality education in primary schools across the country, reports UNB.
"We're all stakeholders… so, participation of all of us is needed to implement the PEDP project," he said addressing a review workshop on the 'Second Primary Education Develop-ment Programme'.
Asian Development Bank (ADB) country director Hua Du was the special guest at the workshop held at the Directorate of Primary Education in the city.
Directorate of Primary Education organised the workshop to have necessary recommendations for making a success of the 'Mid Term Review' to be held next October.
The government in collaboration with 11 development partners has been implementing the six-year 'Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP)' since 2004 to improve the quality of primary education in the country.
Adviser Quadri said the PEDP-II project is playing a very important role in improving the quality of education and extending it. "The government's objective is to extend and improve the standard of education."
He said there have been some achievements, including the infrastructure development, employment opportunity and good governance in primary education. "The number of trained teachers has increased substantially," he said, adding, "but we expect a lot more from this programme."
ADB Country Director Hua Du in her speech said the core objective of PEDP-II is to improve the quality of primary education and to improve access, both in line with the government's international commitment to MDGs and 'Education for All'.
She said, "A major cross-cutting principle that is gradually and increasingly becoming more prominent is education governance to make primary education accountable, transparent, participatory and responsive."
Hua Du mentioned that the items that have direct implication on quality and equity at the school level include strengthening the leadership of head teachers and the school management committee, effective implementation of school level improvement plans and upazila education plans, and making schools and classrooms inclusive.
She emphasised the role of media in this process to give the clear message as well as to seek feedback on various aspects of reform and implementation.
Chaired by Primary and Mass Education secretary Mohammad Mosharaf Hossain Bhuiyan, the programme was also addressed by Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education Khondaker M Asaduzzaman.
Joint programme director of PEDP-II Chowdhury Mufad Ahmed presented a keynote at the review workshop, where he said some 1.62 crore children in 6-10 years age group are primary school students in Bangladesh. "Gross enrolment rate is 94 per cent while net enrollment rate is 87 per cent," he added.
