Agricultural extension services providers of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) should work as skilled coordinators between the farmers and the new innovation of research and technology, said Food and Disaster Minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque Tuesday.
The minister said: "The Sub Assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAO) and Upazila Agriculture Officers (UAO) have to do their job with dedication and skill so that the farmers can get information more effectively."
He suggested setting up of an evaluation and monitoring cell for the agricultural extension services of DAE, which should be more effective to develop the skill of officers, so that they could provide information in a better way.
"Bangladesh is a food-deficit country. Around 40 per cent people are living under the poverty line while 35 per cent are suffering from malnutrition," he said.
"For this we have to go for new research and innovation of crops as well as group farming to tackle the food crisis and take preparation to face the climate change."
He said this as the chief guest while addressing at a roundtable discussion on "Agricultural Extension Services in Crop sector of Bangladesh: Some Suggestions for Improvement" organised by Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) at its conference centre.
