Dr. Kandeh K.Yumkella, Director-General of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) expressed his firm commitment to support Bangladesh's science and innovation infrastructure within BCSIR through the Ministry of Science and ICT in the coming year under various international technical assistance actions.
While visiting BCSIR and its newly developed nation's first reference laboratory in chemistry, namely, Instrumentation & Calibration Service Laboratory (ICSL) in BCSIR recently, the UNIDO's chief executive commented that UNIDO would be happy to "scale up the partnership" with this new laboratory for the development of the national measurement system to be accepted by the international communities through accreditation.
In his inspirational speech DG UNIDO was exemplifying the importance of science and technology to be utilized for adding values to the Bangladeshi products and to improve the quality, to be competitive. He emphasized that there is no alternative to create national wealth to eradicate the poverty through industrialisation and promoting SMEs.
To see Bangladesh to be the middle income country as per Vision 2021, it is absolutely essential to apply the science and technological knowledge.
He envisioned that BCSIR may act as the regional hub in science and innovation and to reach that goal UNIDO would be instrumental to upgrade BCSIR within South-South Cooperation and other technical collaborations with developed partners. UNIDO was ready to transfer "knowledge" in building the nation a prosperous with its testing, certification and technical capacities, he added.
With the development partner EU, NORAD and other, a number of current and future interventions are being implemented by UNIDO to help country so that the Bangladeshi products are improved with its quality and competitive as well as. He emphasized that UNIDO will be with BCSIR and ICSL in earning the accreditation in various fields.
During this visit Mr. Md. Abdul Hannan, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to UN in Geneva requested all concerned to make his connections and position in United Nations to get any assistance for the development of the country in science, innovation, industrialization, trade and commerce.
He BCSIR along with other UNIDO delegations from Vienna, Indonesia, Thailand, India lead by Dr. Kandeh K.Yumkella.
UNIDO's high delegation also visited the project site of ICSL-BCSIR to see the progress of the works to be completed by the year 2010 with a full funding from Government worth of BDT 242.0 million. DG UNIDO expressed his satisfaction and the quality of the technical tasks taken over under this project lead by Ms. Mala Khan, nation's first women scientist having the expertise in Laboratory Information Management System and Instrumentation.
