Thrust on ensuring rights of disabled

Sunday, 1 January 2012

Speakers at a roundtable Saturday called for launching social movement to establish and ensure the rights of the disabled, particularly of disabled women, through an amendment to the constitution, reports UNB.
"The rights of persons with disability will have to be ensured under the state policy," Prof Humayun Kabir, a former member of Parliament, said at the roundtable on 'State, Position and Rights of Disabled Women' held at the National Press Club in the city.
The Disabled Rehabilitation and Research Association (DRRA) in cooperation with Manusher Jonno Foundation organised the roundtable. People of various professions, including women leaders, teachers and NGO representatives attended the function.
Speaking at the roundtable, Prof Humayun Kabir said that the rights of the disabled were not ensured in the constitution. Persons with disability live in pitiable condition, depending on the mercy of other people.
"It's essential to ensure their (disabled) participation in the local government and the national government (parliament) through amendment to the constitution," he said.
Prof Kabir also said that some 10 per cent of the country's population had been living in the society with various disabilities.
"Persons with disability have to face different social discriminations," he said.
DRRA Executive Director Farida Yesmin said that over the years, her organisation had helped to incorporate more than 400 disabled adolescent girls in the mainstream education across the country.
Aushtomi Malo, editor of Narikontha Unnayan Sangstha, presented a keynote paper at the roundtable.
