Thrust on expansion of small, cottage industries

Chairman of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Ashraf Mohammad Iqbal underscored Sunday the importance of rapid expansion of the sector in the country to alleviate poverty.
"Poverty and unemployment problems are the prime obstacles to the country's development. So rapid growth of the potential sector will help reduce poverty in the country," he said while inaugurating the 5-day long spring fair and handicraft exhibition as chief guest.
The design center of BSCIC organised the fair and exhibition on the occasion the Independence and the National Day at the BSCIC office at Motijheel in the city aiming to promote the sector.
The inaugural function was presided over by BSCIC chief designer Kamaluddin Ahmmed.
Mr. Iqbal assured some 25,000 trainees, who have been trained in 11 different trades from the design center of BSCIC, of all possible assistance from BSCIC.
The BSCIC chairman urged the trainees to play their role in raising production, income and to generate employment by utilizing their skills obtained through the training.
Forty five successful trainees of different trades were given certificates during the inauguration ceremony.
Businessmen, mostly are women, are taking part in the fair to showcase their products in 60 stalls. The products include fabrics, block, boutiques, embroidery, jute, lather products, bamboo and wood made items.
The fair and exhibition would continue up to March 26, the day of independence, and would remain open for all from 10am to 5 pm.
Among others, BSCIC director (sales and technology) Sayef Uddin and other top BSCIC officials were present at the function.
