Thrust on increasing GDP to 7.5pc

CHITTAGONG, Nov 12: Bangladesh is likely to emerge as a middle income country by the year 2016 if annual GDP growth rate is upgraded to 7 and a half per cent per annum. Proper implementation of the first generation reforms programme and development of the human resources are needed to be ensured to make it happen.
The speakers made these observation at a seminar on "Challenges for Bangladesh in becoming a Middle Income Country(MIC) jointly organised by the World Bank (WB) and Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) at chamber house today.
WB Senior Economist Sandwip Mohajan presented the keynote paper on 'Bangladesh: Strategy for sustained growth, a recently published research report of WB' in the seminar which was presided over by the CCCI president Saifuzzaman Chowdhury.
While presenting keynote paper, over the WB published report, Sandwip Mohajan underscored the need for ensuring good governance, and regulatory environment, elimination of infrastructural barriers, establishing efficient financial management and adopting open trade policy.
CCCI president in his address said, as the WB imposed certain hard terms and conditions towards socio-economic uplift programmes, desired success towards these goals could not be achieved.
Describing the high rate of interest on bank loan as a suicidal one, CCCI president called upon the WB to provide loan on justified, easy and tolerable terms in consistent with the goal of economic development of the country.
