Thrust on independent Ombudsman to foster accountable judicial system

A discussion meeting titled 'Judicial Accountability in Bangladesh: Is Ombudsman an Option?' was organised at city's BRAC Centre recently by Society of Justice (SoJ), a human rights defending organisation.

SoJ President Professor Mizanur Rahman presided over the programme. Justice Mohammad Gholam Rabbani attended the meeting as the chief guest, while Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam was the special guest. Barrister Charles Whiteley, first secretary of European Commission, Dhaka, was present in the programme as the guest of honour.

Head of Law Department of Daffodil International University Prof Dr Sarkar Ali Akkas and SoJ Secretary General Advocate Mahbubul Islam presented the keynote paper.

The main focus of the paper was on the system of judicial accountability, its problems and probable solutions. An independent office of Ombudsman was suggested as a possible option to foster an accountable and accessible judicial system in which public confidence would be higher than now.

Among others, Dr AKM Saifullah, Dr Uttam Kumar Das, Muhammad Taher, Taleya Rahman, Nurul Kabir, Advocate Nafisa Hoque, Advocate Ayesha Khatoon and Advocate ASM Aminul hoque were also present in the discussion.
