Thrust on nat'l IP policy to facilitate innovation

The 10th World Intellectual Property Day was observed in the country Monday, with a call to formulate a national intellectual property (IP) policy to establish a common framework for protecting the country's intellectual properties.
The policy will help promote national economic and social development, speakers at a discussion said.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks under the Ministry of Industries, and Intellectual Property Association of Bangladesh jointly organised the discussion on 'Economic Development: A Need For National IP Policy' at the DCCI Auditorium.
The theme of the day this year is "Innovation - Linking the World."
DCCI President and session chairperson Abul Kasem Khan said to achieve the 'Vision 2021' objectives and build a 'Digital Bangladesh' we should introduce the IP policy, and in order to enhance our competitiveness it should be an integral component of the national economic policy. The policy will facilitate and encourage innovation and creativity, he also said.
"Bangladesh should review the existing IP policies of the country's like the US, UK and Japan to develop one of our own. We need to promote an effective IP policy awareness campaign also," he added.
Secretary of Ministry of Cultural Affairs Hedayetullah Al Mamoon said an IP policy should be introduced, considering the overall condition of the country.
