Thrust on patronising local plastic sector

Adviser to the Prime Minister H T Imam Thursday emphasised the need for greater publicity on the uses of local plastic products and interaction with users to boost the sector.
"This industry has a domestic market of Tk 40 billion and the annual export stands around Tk 4.0 billion. It has a large potentiality. But the local plastic industry people do not expose their product in the right way."
He said this while addressing the closing ceremony of the 6th Dhaka International Plastic, Packaging and Printing Industrial Fair at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
He said "The people are not fully aware about locally made plastic products and their uses and that's why they throw polythene here and there which create trouble."
Ferdous Wahed, president of Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) told FE that around $ 1.0 million was transacted in the 4-day long fair.
He said "the government should focus on the bank guarantee barrier and the importer find difficulties to mention 'Not for Sale' on the bonded goods as per the direction of customs and ports."
He added that the government should ensure hassle free procedure to boost the industry otherwise people will not be interested to invest in the sector.
Abul Kashem Khan, president of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry said "Now the plastic products are 50 per cent recyclable and we hope to increase it to 100 per cent if the governments provides policy supports."
Golam Dastagir Gazi, managing director of Gazi Group, Morshed Alam, chairman of Bengal Group, among others, spoke in the closing ceremony.
The organisers said a total of 350 exhibitors of 200 stalls from 13 foreign countries participated in the fair.
