No profession can flourish and last long in the world if sympathy towards the people is lacking, said Bangladesh Bank governor Salehuddin Ahmed at a discussion in the city on Wednesday.
Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management held the discussion titled "Eighth Nurul Matin Memorial Lecture on Ethics in Banking" at BIBM.
Dr. Salehuddin said, the significance of morality and ethics is beyond description for professionals in all sectors including banking sector as these virtues help them to be more helpful to the people. Besides, any profession devoid of ethics and responsibility cannot develop and go forward by overcoming adversity and hurdles.
Stressing the need for introducing professional responsibility in the banking sector, the central bank governor said, the country's banking sector will be more dynamic if the bankers get recognition of their good performances in one hand and are rebuked for their guilt on the other.
In the banking arena, many entrepreneurs have contributed a lot to the national economy though ethics and responsibility are yet to be applied fully, he said and added, the bankers are providing services to the people in spite of various limitations.
Presenting the keynote paper at the discussion, professor Muzaffer Ahmad said, the country is plagued with massive corruption. Professionals, devoid of ethical values, have played a key role in turning Bangladesh into a corrupt country, he added.
Bankers should try to gain public confidence as it plays a significant role in establishing a dynamic banking system in the country and public confidence is based on ethics and responsibility of bankers. All the financial institutions including the central bank should act properly so that the whole banking system of the country is governed on the basis of ethics and responsibility.
Laying emphasis on honesty and transparency in the banking system, Dr. Muzaffer said, without ensuring it, the sector will not be able to work for the greater national interest.
In the present socio-economic perspective, banks are inseparable part of the country. So, all activities in this sector should be transparent, pro-people and service-oriented.
BIBM Director General Ruhul Amin also spoke at the discussion.
