Politics is used as a business or investment in the country, but not for social development or the development of the country, said speakers at a dialogue Monday.
Though political parties utter slogan of democracy but they do not practice it within the parties, it was clear when they failed to submit their proper documents to the Election Commission (EC), they added.
Election Working Group (EWG) organised the dialogue at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre where Justice Golam Rabbani was present as the chief guest in the inaugural session.
Speakers emphasised on to strengthen the EC for free and fair election which is not possible if political parties are not brought under regulation.
Integrity of a political party cannot be ensured without being registered and submission of their financial statements, they added.
They also stressed on reforming the election related rules.
"We are living in a haphazard situation, as no one is running in specific way," said Justice Golam Rabbani and urged "the government to give local government election first and then parliament election".
He said it is seen that in most cases there is gulf of differences between the status of candidates and voters. He asked the government to make a provision so that pro-people persons are elected.
The veteran justice said presently election means capital investment. So we have to come out from this situation.
Dr Badiul Alam Mazumdar, secretary of SUJAN, underscored the need for making information of candidates available to voters to bring transparency into politics.
He said, "The political parties of our country want to go to power. But they do not think about their transparency."
Co-Chair of the EWC Prof Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Abdul Awal and TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman spoke in the programme which was divided into four sessions.
