TIB condemns police atrocities on protest rally

FE Report | Tuesday, 12 May 2015

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has strongly condemned the recent police atrocities on a peaceful rally, organised in protest against sexual harassment of women on Dhaka University campus on Bangla New Year's day.
Local chapter of the Berlin-based anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International (TI) in a statement issued on Monday called upon the government to form judicial inquiry body for ensuring exemplary punishment against the policemen involved in the aggressive activities.
TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman in the statement said after the law-enforcers' brutality on the peaceful protest it is clear that the police consider themselves above the law, which is very alarming for establishing democratic rights and rule of law.
He said the law-enforcement agencies have completely failed to carry out their duties on Dhaka University campus during Bangla New Year celebration. They played the role of silent spectators instead of protecting women from sexual harassment.
On the other hand, the police force launched an inhuman attack on the students, who staged protest in a democratic way against the assault that severely hampered image of the force.
The organisation said it is not enough to provide traditional punishments like temporary suspension or closing the officials concerned.
"Exemplary punishment is required for brining discipline, professionalism and respect to laws in the force," it added.
