TIB demands resignation of railway minister

Sunday, 8 May 2022

FE Report
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Saturday called upon railway minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan to resign from his position for the sake of fair investigation into the suspension of a TTE (travelling ticket examiner).
Terming the suspension a malicious incident, the anti-graft watchdog in a statement said the TTE has been allegedly suspended after he fined three passengers who were travelling without tickets identifying themselves as the relatives of the railway minister.
Local chapter of Berlin-based Transparency International also expressed deep concern over the suspension of the TTE. "Instead of rewarding the TTE, the decision to suspend him gives a message to the people of the country that the laws are not applicable to powerful people and their relatives as well."
For the sake of fair investigation into the sensational incident, it urged the railway minister to step down from the ministry temporarily on moral grounds.
"The incident is a shameful and vicious example of misuse of power. In this incident, power is misused in two ways. One the passengers identifying themselves as the minister's relatives were travelling without tickets while the authorities did not give any scope of self-defence to the TTE before the suspension," TIB executive director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said in the statement.
