TIB urges govt not to allow black money legalising

FE Report | Wednesday, 28 May 2014

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has again expressed concern over the possible budgetary provision to legalise black money, and called upon the government to refrain from offering such facility in the upcoming budget for fiscal year (FY) 2014-15.
In a statement, local chapter of the Berlin-based organisation also called for greater openness, transparency, public debate and scrutiny of all budgetary allocations, including that for defence.
"We're encouraged that the government is reportedly willing to discontinue the provision for whitening black money in the upcoming national budget. The government will demonstrate the capacity to remain firm and instead of yielding to any unholy pressures of vested quarters as the provision is contradictory to article 20(2) of the Constitution," TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekhruzzaman said in the statement.
Citing Mr. Zaman, it said the unethical provision practically rewards corrupt practices and discourages honesty. It also sends a wrong message that the government acts as protector and promoter of corruption and illegality.
