Tidal surge inundates 16 villages in Kutubdia

COX'S BAZAR, July 08: Under the influence of low over Bay and new moon, at least 16 villages of Kutubdia Island have been inundated by tidal surge.
Nearly 10,000 villagers are marooned by tidal water since Thursday.
According to sources, water is entering the locality through the broken embankment of the Island as sea water is flowing over four to five feet high than normal.
Upazila Chairman of Kutubdia Faridul Islam Chowdhury said more than 200 tidal surge-affected people have been shifted to cyclone shelters and high lands till Sunday evening.
Most of the villages of the six unions of the Island are inundated by sea water.
Severely affected villages are Kaisar Para, Foyzanir para, Char Dhurong of Uttar Dhorong union, Kahar Para, Kazir Para, Teli Para, Kumirar Chara, Jele Para of Ali Akbar Daill union and Ali Fakir Dail village of Uttar Dhorong union.
Local people alleged that about 20 km-long embankment has been lying unrepaired over the last few years. As a result people of Kutubdia are affected by tidal surge in the rainy season.
Due to gusty wind tamarisk (jhaw tree) on 100 hectares of land near Cox's Bazar sea beach have been damaged in coastal areas of the district, sources said.
Cox's Bazar Met office recorded 117 mm rainfall in the last 48 hours. Maritime ports of Cox's Bazar and Chattogram have been advised to continue hoisting local cautionary signal number three.
