Tiger sculpture collapse kills man in sleep

A van driver was killed after a sculpture of a tiger collapsed on him in the capital's Karwan Bazar intersection early Friday, police said.
The driver of a manually-driven three-wheeler was identified as Mohammad Ali (42), father of two children. He hailed from Chandpur Sadar Upazila.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalabagan Police Station Mohammad Iqbal told the FE that the incident took place at about 3:15am when Mohammad Ali was sleeping close to the sculptures of two Royal Bengal tigers.
 "The sculpture of one of the big cats suddenly collapsed on him amid rains, leaving him dead on the spot," he said, adding that they sent his body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for autopsy.
Firefighter Mohammad Shahid, who rushed to the spot for recovery work, said the base of the sculptures might have weakened due to incessant rains that the capital had witnessed for the last couple of months.
The sculptures of the tigers were installed in Karwan Bazar Intersection in 2011 before the ICC Cricket World Cup, which was hosted by Bangladesh along with India and Sri Lanka and the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) was doing the maintenance work.
