Tigers, Sundarbans can be saved thru\\\' jt efforts: US

The two-day 2015 combating wildlife trafficking workshop on ‘Protecting and Saving Our Tigers’ concluded at the Police Staff College in Mirpur with a call to work together for saving tigers and the Sundarbans. US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat and Law Minister Anisul Huq presided over the closing ceremony. The two-day workshop was opened on Wednesday by USAID-Bangladesh Mission Director Janina Jaruzelski and Secretary of Forest and Environment Ministry Dr Kamaluddin Ahmed. Jaruzelski said all must cooperate with each other right now like never before, and that the cooperation and communication need to go across lines of traditional ministries, professions, and functions so that everyone who has an interest in this issue or responsibilities relevant to this issue is working together. “Working together, you have the opportunity to save the famous ?Bengal Tiger and its world-famous home, the Sundarbans, and help them both remain a part of the Bangladesh’s heritage for generations to come,” she said. The event marked the first time in Bangladesh history that representatives from all components of the criminal justice system, enforcement agencies and civil society gathered to share their knowledge and establish working relationships to combat wildlife trafficking. The workshop included presentations and panels on the current state of the tiger population in the Sundarbans, interagency cooperation, and wildlife trafficking criminal law, best practices for the investigation and prosecution of wildlife trafficking crime and an action plan for the way forward in combating wildlife trafficking in Bangladesh, according to a mews agency.
