Timely steps help avert global recession: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Thursday that effective and timely steps by the present government were behind the success of Bangladesh averting the world economic meltdown when most of the strong economies had been affected badly, reports UNB.
She made the remark when Governor of the State of Oregon Theodore Kulongoski called on her at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). Hasina said that during the recession period, her government was able to save the country from the impacts of the worldwide economic crisis. Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad briefed the reporters after the meeting.
The Prime Minister said that the present government is now putting highest emphasis on computer literacy to fulfill the vision of 'Digital Bangladesh'.
She mentioned that the present government has formulated the new education policy keeping in view the current trend of world education.
Hasina said the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and USA would strengthen further.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister and the Governor of Oregon discussed education, food security, Bangladesh's peacekeeping force, agriculture, subsidy on fertiliser and poverty-alleviation.
Governor of the State of Oregon Theodore Kulongoski is now in Bangladesh under the State Partnership Programme of the United States.
Prime Minister Hasina and Governor Kulongoski also discussed cooperation in various sectors including training for the Bangladesh armed forces by the Oregon National Guard.
Oregon Governor praised the pragmatic leadership of Hasina. He specially thanked Hasina for Bangladesh's contribution to the UN peacekeeping missions.
Ambassador at-large M Ziauddin and Principal Staff Officer (PSO) Lt Gen Abdul Wadud were present during the meeting.
