Tipaimukh dam puts 70m 'at risk', says Indian development activist

India's planned Tipaimukh Dam puts 70 million "at risk" in northeast India and adjoining areas, including Bangladesh, and people of the region must co-ordinate efforts to safeguard sustainable development in face of such controversial projects, says Anastasia Cristalina Pinto, executive director of the Manipur-based Centre for Organisation Research and Education (CORE), reports bdnews24.com.
Environmental pressure groups in both Bangladesh and Manipur state have been voicing strong concern over the potential impact of the contentious Indian dam over the Barak River in downstream areas.
Pinto told the news agency in an interview during a recent visit to Dhaka, the people of Manipur, and other northeast states, are "justifiably unhappy" with the Indian government's development approach in the region.
