Tipu urges India to remove trade barriers
Thursday, 24 October 2019
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has urged India to remove all tariff and non-tariff barriers to help Bangladesh increase its exports to the neighbouring country, reports BSS.
He said Bangladesh is the largest trade partner of India in the sub-continent. The trade volume of the two countries is increasing day by day, he pointed out.
"But Bangladesh can't export in India as per its expectation due to tariff and non-tariff barriers," he pointed out. He was addressing an event styled 'Indo-Bangladesh Stakeholders Meeting' on Tuesday in Guwahati, the capital of India's north-eastern Assam state, said a press release in Dhaka.
The commerce minister said it is essential to simplify the trade rules and regulations of India, especially in the north-east part, for increasing the export of Bangladeshi products.
He mentioned that Bangladesh faced difficulties for the sudden decision of India on onion import and Bangladesh could keep stable its market through importing from alternative sources, if the country knew the decision earlier.
Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister of India's Tripura state Biplab Kumar Deb and Economic Affairs Advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Dr Moshiur Rahman attended the conference, among others.
A Bangladesh delegation, led by Tipu Munshi, is now visiting India to attend two events, the 'Silang Discussion-2019' and the 'Indo-Bangladesh Stakeholder Conference'.
