FE Report
The energy ministry has rejected the plea by Titas to keep the compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations closed twice a week, but upheld the proposed staggered gas supply plan for industries in order to cope with the mounting gas demand, officials said Wednesday.
"We are not in favour of closing the CNG stations even for a single day considering the woes of the commuters," a senior energy ministry official said.
He said the plan to initiate the staggered gas supply to industries has already been sent to the Prime Minister (PM) for approval.
It would be executed immediately after the PM's nod, he added.
The state-owned Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd (TGTDCL) has recently proposed closure of the CNG stations at least twice a week as an austerity measure in coping with the gas crisis.
Titas also suggested slashing of gas supplies to several power plants to provide gas to industries and residential houses against the backdrop of the severe gas crisis with the advent of the winter.
As per the proposed staggered supply plan, gas supplies to the industries in Savar and Keraniganj will be suspended on Sunday, to the Gazipur main industrial belt on Monday, to Mymensingh, Sonargaon, Gouripur and some parts of Gazipur on Tuesday.
The industries in Narsingdi, Ghorashal, Monohardi, Bhairab, Brahmanbaria, Bhaluka and some parts of Dhaka metropolitan area including Jinjira will not get gas supply on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the industries in Sonargaon area will not get gas supply, while on Friday factories in Fatullah, Narayanganj and Tangail will go without gas.
Industries in Tongi, Manikganj and in some parts of the metropolis will not get gas on Saturday under the staggered gas supply plan.
