Protesting Appointment of New MD
Titas staff vandalise Petrobangla office
FE REPORT | Wednesday, 11 September 2024
Unruly employees of the state-run Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd (TGTDCL) vandalised the Petrobangla office in the capital on Tuesday following the cancellation of the contractual appointment of its former managing director engineer Harun-or-Rashid Mollah.
They also staged a demonstration on the office premises against the appointment of new managing director Shahnewaz Parvez.
Harun-or-Rashid's contractual appointment was cancelled on September 9 while Parvez was appointed TGTDCL acting managing director.
The protest erupted when new managing director Parvez went to the TGTDCL office to join on Tuesday morning.
The unruly employees restricted Mr Parvez from taking charge and attacked the Petrobangla office.
Some outsiders also took part with them when they went destructive inside the Petrobangla office, says an official statement.
They also attacked a journalist on duty, while he was video-graphing the incident.
"According to the existing law, it is Petrobangla's right to appoint or nominate managing director in any of the Petrobangla's subsidiary companies including the TGTDCL."
Mr Parvez is known as an honest and efficient government official in energy sector, Petrobangla acknowledged.
The Petrobangla, however, temporarily suspended four Petrobangla fficials and one employee for their alleged connections into the incident.
They were also sent to mandatory vacation and were asked not to come to office until further order.
The TGTDCL will also take action against its unruly employees today (Wednesday) after the joining of the new MD.
