Tk 12.41b allocated for benefit of women, children

The proposed budget for the fiscal year 2010-11 has allocated Tk 12.41 billion (1241 crore) for the Ministry of Women and Childrens' Affairs for women empowerment and children welfare.
The amount has been allocated aiming to increase women's participation in economic development, to train up and create employment opportunity in technology-driven jobs for women, to create awareness about violence against women and children and their trafficking and to set up day care centres and child development centres.
"We have fixed a target of Tk 12.41 billion as development and non development combined fund for the next fiscal, including Tk. 1.25 billion as block allocation against various programmes for women empowerment and children welfare," said Finance Minister AMA Muhith Thursday in his budget speech.
"About 25.9 per cent (4.4 per cent of GDP) of the total proposed expenditure in FY2010-11 will be allocated for ensuring gender parity."
He said, "we will extend computer training programmes to 34 districts to create employment opportunity for women so that they get more opportunity for employment in technology-driven jobs."
"We have already set up One-Stop Crisis Centre in hospitals located in six divisional towns and we will extend this programme all over the country in the next financial year, that will ensure provision of emergency and legal assistance to those women and children who are victims of violence."
The minister said the government is continuing child labour reducing activities to protect children from risky jobs and within next three years it will keep 40,000 children away from risky jobs and provide them with non-formal education.
"We have taken steps to set up six child development centres in big cities to assist in flourishing children's latent talents and provide nutrition, education and amusement facilities which will be implemented in the next financial year."
