Tk 1.72b DU budget likely

Dhaka University (DU) has prepared a draft budget of Tk 1.72 billion for the fiscal 2009-10 keeping an allocation of only nine per cent of the total budget for education and research activities of the university.
DU Director of Accounts Md Ashraf Uddin told the FE that the university has set aside Tk 157 million for education and research activities, while Tk 1.37 billion for salary, allowance and pension of the teachers, officials and employees and Tk 180 million for repair and maintenance of the buildings, halls and institutes this fiscal.
He said the draft budget has been prepared showing a deficit of Tk 17.5 million. The budget will be finalised at the annual senate session of the university at the end of this month.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) will provide Tk 1.52 billion of the total budget while the internal earnings of the university has been fixed at Tk 180 million.
Sources said the UGC has asked the university not to recruit any manpower at the university without the permission of the apex controlling body of universities in the country.
The UGC has also directed the university not to spend money allocated for one sector on another and open new departments or institutes without its prior permission.
