Tk 250m sugar lies unsold in Panchagarh Sugar Mill

NILPHAMARI, Jul 24: Panchagarh sugar mill crushed one lakh 37 thousand 982 metric tonnes sugar cane to produce 10,266 metric tonnes of sugar.
Last years unsold stock of sugar was 1330 metric tonnes in the just concluded season of 2006-07. Total stock of sugar in the mill godown was 11,596 metric tonnes out of which 35 96 metric tonnes were sold to the selected dealers of the mill and the rest 8,000 tonnes worth Tk 250 million still remained unsold creating manifold problems for the mill.
Sources said 5,000 sugar cane farmers of the mill belt are yet to get Tk 30 million as price of sugar cane. On the other hand, farmers face hardship in purchasing fertilisers and pesticides for their sugar cane plants of 11,100 hectares of land. They are demanding unpaid price of sugar cane they had supplied to the mill.
Panchagarh sugar mill sources said in the coming years sugar cane production may suffer a setback due to delay in payment of sugar cane price to the farmers.
Sources said due to cheap price of imported sugar locally produced sugar remained unsold creating manifold problems to the sugar mills and sugar cane farmers of the country.
