Tk 2b damage suit filed against \\\'Prothom Alo\\\'

A Tk 2 billion (200 crore) damage suit was filed against “Prothom Alo” editor and publisher Matiur Rahman and two other journalists of the daily newspaper for running reports on illegal occupation of land by “land grabbers”. Engineer MA Rashid, owner of the Karnaphuli Ship Builders Limited, lodged the case with the 4th Joint District Judge’s Court in Dhaka on Monday morning. Judge Abu Taher fixed March 10 to pass an order on the acceptance of the case. The two journalists of Prothom Alo who have been made accused in the case are chief news editor and Comilla correspondent of the national daily. The reports under the headlines “Montrir Porichitokey Railwayer Jomi Boraddo Deyar Uddog” and “Thikadarer Biyete Tin Montri Hazir” were published on December 21 in 2012 and February 23 this year respectively. The two other reports were published in editorial of the vernacular daily under the captions “Rail Montrir Jomi Samprodan” and “Dawat, Sangbordhona Aar Koto” published on December 22 in 2012 and February 2, according to a news agency.
