CHITTAGONG, Sept 19: On completion of long 12 years of border trade through Teknaf between Bangladesh and Myanmar beginning from the year 1995, around Tk. 3.50 billion (350 crore) was earned as revenue during the period, concerned sources said.
The formal journey of Teknaf-Mongdu boarder trade was launched on September 5 in 1995 through holding colourful functions at Teknaf and Mongdu separately in presence of dignitaries of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
With a view to ensuring transaction of business through legal means discouraging smuggling along Teknaf border which had been regarded as a smuggling zone earlier, the border trade was introduced between Bangladesh and Myanmar. Despite being riddled with manifold problems, the very endeavour of the government has achieved success with the sincerity and cooperation from all concerned quarters including exporters and importers, businessmen, customs and C&F agents.
In this connection, Teknaf landport C&F Agents Association sources said, if the irregularities and problems of Teknaf landport can be resolved, revenue earnings would increase many fold.
As there remain immense potentialities at Teknaf point in comparison with other points of the country, infrastructural development including establishment of C&F Agents Association office, warehouse, jetties, arrangement of adequate water supply and opening of branches of banks is needed to be ensured at Teknaf point, sources observed.
For the greater interest of earning revenue at enhanced volumes, persisting problems at Teknaf landport should be resolved on an urgent basis, sources said.
