Tk 39m incentive programmme during Aus season in Sylhet

SYLHET, May 31: The loss of Boro paddy due to the hailstorm and inundation in Sylhet division has been estimated at about Tk 100 million, official sources informed.
Boro paddy was cultivated on 46,1518 hectares in 4 districts in the division with a targeted production of 17,55, 453 tonnes of rice in the just ended season. Of the total 24,576 hectares of land, including 20,019 hectares in Sunamganj district were damaged by the calamities, causing the loss of 78,880 tonnes of rice. With a view to recouping the crop loss, a programme has been taken up for 28,100 farmers in 25 selected upozilas of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj districts during the current Aush season. Among them, 25000 farmers are being given HYV Boro seeds while 3100 getting Nerika variety seeds.
These selected farmers in those upozilas are being given incentive in kind, informed the Additional Director of the DAE, Sylhet division Md. Sadir Uddin yesterday (Sunday). Under the programme, each of the farmers is being given 15 kg seed of HYV or Nerika varieties of Aush Paddy in addition to 40 kg fertiliser for one bigha land, he added.
Tk 39.8 million has already been spent under the incentive programme in the division's upozilas, the official told this correspondent.
