A devastating fire that broke out at a footwear (slipper) factory in the city's Shyampur area early Saturday gutted valuables and machinery of its six godowns and partially damaged adjacent Otobi building and a petrol pump. Fire brigade sources said the blaze originated from an electric short circuit in a semi-pucca godown of Makson Rubber Industries Ltd at about 12:45 am and soon engulfed its five nearby godowns gutting all the valuables and machinery. The adjoining building of Otobi furniture and the petrol pump were also partially damaged by the devastating flame. Fire brigade sources estimated that the valuables worth over Tk 40 million (4 crore) of the factory were totally gutted. — UNB
