Tk 500m rotten goods seized, five godowns sealed in Ctg

CHITTAGONG, Sept 9: In one of the greatest ever anti-adulteration drives the district magistracy and BSTI officials seized huge quantities of consumer goods worth over Tk 500 million and sealed off five godowns in the city today.
Acting on a tip-off a mobile court headed by Magistrate Nurul Huq seized several hundred tonnes of different kinds of rotten pulses, mainly black beans (mash kolai) and sodium hydrosulphate, huge quantity of rotten jira and moth-eaten matar dal in oil drums, rotten lexus biscuits, date-expired baby foods, date-expired B-cool brand soft drink powder and coconut oil, air-conditioner and caustic soda from five godowns at Rahmannagar area under Panchlaish police station.
Godown keepers Md Ershad Hussain and Shamsuddoha Tuhin told the mobile court that the godowns were rented by Kamrul Huq, owner of Shahjalal Trading of Majhirghat in the city.
The RAB members and BSTI officials first raided the godown of Bangladesh Paper Products at noon and found over 100 tonnes of pulses and sodium hydrosulphate and later they raided four other adjacent godowns till 7:00pm today.
"We have seized goods valued over Tk 500 million and sealed off all the 5 godowns. We are astonished to find such a huge quantity of damp, rotten, worm-eaten mash kolai, matar dal, gram being mixed up in the godowns," Magistrate Nurul Huq said.
